ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The Associate Director of Community Engagement plays a vital role in advancing the Museum of the Moving Image’s mission as a cultural anchor for Astoria, Queens, and a hub for inclusive and community-centered programming across New York City.

Working closely with the Associate Director of Public Programming, this position focuses on building strong community relationships, co-organizing and producing Open Worlds public programs, and ensuring that MoMI’s engagement efforts reflect the voices and creativity of its surrounding neighborhoods. The Associate Director will also lead the Museum’s Neighborhood Council and oversee Marvels of Media—MoMI’s pioneering initiative celebrating media-makers on the spectrum.

This role requires a balance of creativity, organization, and relationship-building—ideal for a cultural producer passionate about connecting people, ideas, and storytelling through the moving image.

Job Responsibilities:

Community Engagement & Partnerships

  • Serve as the Museum’s primary liaison to community organizations, schools, cultural groups, and civic associations in Western Queens and beyond.
  • Lead and manage MoMI’s Neighborhood Council, ensuring it remains an active, inclusive advisory group that informs programming and outreach.
  • Cultivate and maintain long-term partnerships that align with the Museum’s mission and values, including co-presented programs, festivals, and residencies.
  • Represent the Museum at community meetings, cultural events, and local coalitions to strengthen visibility and collaboration.
  • Collaborate with the Development team on partnership proposals, sponsor relationships, and reporting tied to community initiatives.

Program Curation & Production

  • Co-organize and help produce Open Worlds programming alongside the Associate Director of Public Programming, ensuring local relevance and accessibility.
  • Support planning, logistics, and production for community-centered events, in partnership with MoMI’s A/V, Visitor Experience, and Operations teams.
  • Contribute to program concept development, artist outreach, and event execution that reflect the diverse communities of Queens.
  • Draft and edit event copy, artist bios, and community partner materials for public and internal use.
  • Support the production of other Museum events, including exhibition openings, galas, special events, and other.
  • Lead the programming for the Lower Level lab.

Marvels of Media Oversight

  • Oversee the annual Marvels of Media Festival, including nominations, partnerships, logistics, and community outreach.
  • Coordinate with participating artists, disability advocacy organizations, and media partners to ensure inclusive representation.
  • Collaborate with the Exhibitions and Education departments on Marvels of Media installations, public programs, and related educational activities.

Community Research & Reporting

  • Track attendance, participation, and engagement data for community programs and initiatives.
  • Gather audience and partner feedback to inform strategy and future program development.
  • Contribute to institutional reporting, grant narratives, and impact summaries for funders and stakeholders.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

  • Community Partnerships : Establish and sustain 10 active community partnerships annually with schools, nonprofits, and cultural groups.
  • Neighborhood Council : Hold quarterly meetings with representation across Queens neighborhoods and community sectors.
  • Audience Engagement : Increase participation in community programs by 15% annually, emphasizing local and multilingual audiences.
  • Open Worlds Integration : Co-produce community-centered events annually as part of the Open Worlds yearlong series.
  • Marvels of Media : Deliver an annual Marvels of Media Festival that meets attendance, accessibility, and partnership goals.
  • Impact Reporting : Produce quarterly engagement summaries measuring reach, diversity, and qualitative impact.

Qualifications, Skills, and Knowledge:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Arts Administration, Museum Studies, Cultural Studies, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in community engagement, cultural programming, or event coordination, preferably in a museum or nonprofit setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to build trust with a wide range of community stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and accessibility in public programming.
  • Experience planning, producing, or co-presenting public events.
  • Familiarity with the cultural and community landscape of Queens and New York City.
  • Strong writing, editing, and project management skills; ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.
  • Collaborative, adaptable, and comfortable working across departments in a fast-paced environment.
