Role Overview : 

This position will serve as a Traffic Engineering Intern for the Technical Services Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. The Intern will report to District Traffic Engineer.

 

Hourly Rate:

The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor’s degree.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Conduct field work to collect data and draft work orders as part of initiatives to enhance or preserve traffic safety on the state roadway network within the Crawfordsville District
  • Project intiatives that the Intern will be expected to work on include:
    • Signage to guide drivers in avoiding wrong-way entry at 4-lane divided intersections
    • Signage to improve curve visibility to guide drivers in avoiding roadway departure at curves
    • Similar additional initiatives can be pursued to add or modify traffic control devices (such as signs and markings) at road segments and intersections with certain common characteristics to ensure consistent messaging to drivers 
  • Consult the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) to forumlate recommendations to the District Traffic Engineer on changes to traffic control devices needed to the field.
  • Prepare a presentation for the Crawfordsville District to reflect on projects’ accomplishments and skills/experience gained during the internship period
  • Other duties as assigned

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field
  • Relevant work experience preferred
  • Indiana Driver’s License required to operate state vehicles
  • Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT
  • Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process
  • Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports
  • Analytical skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects
  • Ability to operate computer tools, including GIS and various Microsoft office software products
  • Good research and writing skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts
  • Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
